Top tips for choosing the perfect wedding flowers

When you think of romance, chances are roses are the first flower that pop into your mind. But that’s not to say every wedding has to feature the famous bloom. So where do you start when it comes to choosing your wedding flowers? The flowers you opt for can feel like a huge decision as they can often enhance many of the other features of your big day, such as your venue, furniture and outfits.

The key to the perfect wedding flowers – whether that’s the bouquet or your table settings – is to make them an extension of your personality. Choosing bespoke arrangements of flowers that are your favourite colour or shape, or the scent of which transports you to a special place or memory, however unconventional, will be far more special than an off-the-shelf bunch of classic ‘wedding flowers.’

But with so much choice, it can often feel overwhelming unless you know what you’re doing. That’s why we’ve spoken to our floral expert, Miriam Webster of Miriam Faith Floral Design, to give you a few tips and tricks for choosing the perfect wedding flowers for your special day:

Depending on your personal style, your wedding outfit may or may not have a train, a veil or even a tiara! It can be a lovely touch to add to your bouquet what you’ve held back on with your dress. No train? Use long, trailing stems like orchids, calla lilies or jasmine and greenery such as ferns or evergreen leaves to create a cascading arrangement to mimic the shape. Wearing lace or crystals on your chest or sleeves? Mirror this texture in your bouquet with hydrangea, daisies or accents of gypsophila or make your gems pop with flowers with large, lightly coloured petals such as gardenias or peonies. It’s also smart to match the style of your flowers – either in your hands or those decorating your venue – to the style of your dress. A sleek, modern style gown pairs well with bold, structural flowers, whereas vintage style shapes or materials suit softer, more traditional blooms to keep your dress the centre of attention.

Consider your venue – and menu!

Clever floral designs and arrangements can make a large room feel more intimate, or breathe life and light into a smaller venue – perfect for a micro wedding or blessing ceremony. Work with your florist to choose blooms that complement the décor of your venue to avoid clashing colours or textures. It’s also helpful to consider the catering of your event when it comes to floral arrangements. We know that sounds strange, but a buffet, table service or canape reception all require different table set ups – from height to length to no tables at all! Knowing how much tabletop space you have to play with around plates or serving dishes can help you decide on the size of your arrangements, from wreaths to garlands, or bouquets to posies. And (even stranger sounding!) the food you’re serving at your wedding can also play a role in how you choose your blooms. If your menu features strong smelling dishes, opting for flowers that are beautiful to look at, but subtle in their scent will prevent your guests from being overwhelmed by clashing fragrances.

Seasonal vs timeless

Like almost everything in fashion and design, floristry also goes through trends. Some years stylised arrangements with jewels and ribbons are in vogue, and others have wildflowers and greenery at the top of the most requested list. If you are on a budget, or are trying to celebrate your wedding sustainably, seasonal blooms are a brilliant choice, as they are readily available and very often locally grown, cutting down on their carbon footprint, and keeping costs lower. For example, if you are having a beautiful winter wedding, spray roses, tulips and even eucalyptus stems are a great seasonal choice. If you plan to dry your wedding flowers after your ceremony to keep as a memento, why not choose a dried bouquet to begin with? There are so many timeless, colourful options nowadays that any ideas of dried flowers being brown and boring are a thing of the past!

But all said and done – if your dream bouquet goes against all of these tips and tricks and you still love it – go for it! It’s your day and you’ll feel confident and beautiful, no matter what flowers you choose, and you’re in safe hands - our dedicated wedding and event florist Miriam Webster of Miriam Faith Floral Design will be on hand every step of the way to help you design and create your dream bouquet for your big day at 116 Pall Mall.
