6 wedding trends that will be huge in 2020

Micro wedding
There will be more to nuptials in 2020 than Brexit busting budgets and the Meghan Markle effect – despite expectations even that will be going strong well into the summer months.

Although wedding traditions will, of course, still have some influence, next year we will see an increasing number of couples whom opt for a more intimate and informal approach to their celebrations. Some may even be brave enough to throw away the rulebook altogether, say goodbye to bridal parties – and swap traditional gowns in favour of a jumpsuit.

For those newly engaged couples who are not feeling quite so bold, we have tasked accomplished wedding journalist and industry expert Claire Bloomfield with forecasting the six biggest 2020 wedding trends to consider when you’re planning your big day…

1. VEGAN-FRIENDLY CUISINE

Long gone are the days that ‘special dietary requirements’ was a box that rarely anyone would tick when confirming their attendance to your wedding. Both vegan and free-from menus will grow at a rapid rate next year and this is in part due to number of people adopting a vegan lifestyle continuing to skyrocket. But, it’s also as a result of couples being attracted by the simplicity and purity of plant-based cuisine. However, offering delicious vegan alternatives for your guests will become more than a necessity, it’s also likely to become somewhat of a fashion statement. Look out for suppliers like Ruby’s of London who can make your vegan wedding cake dreams come true, too.

2. MICRO-WEDDINGS

Whilst the big blowout wedding isn’t going anywhere, and we’re not ruling out elopements either, planning an intimate occasion with a limited guest list - but equal grandeur - is widely tipped to be one of the biggest trends in 2020. A micro-wedding, that may include 50 or fewer guests, isn’t just an option couples may decide upon with financial considerations in mind. For some, a micro-wedding will feel like a more intimate occasion and a truer representation of their values.

3. IRRESISTIBLE GRAZING DESSERT TABLES

You will no doubt be familiar with feasting tables piled high with delicious antipasti, charcuterie and cheese, but there’s a new trend creeping in that is even seeing some brides ditch a traditional multi-tier wedding cake. Long decadent grazing dessert tables stacked with sweet treats and patisseries can give your menu a modern makeover and can be a great way to keep all of your guests happy.

4. SUSTAINABLE STYLE

We’re all working towards a more eco-conscious lifestyle so it’s hardly surprising that more and more couples are taking sustainable practices into consideration when they’re thrashing out their wedding plans, too. From buying a dress handmade in the UK, to choosing a caterer who offers organic produce and a finding a florist who will source flowers for your wedding bouquet locally, no gesture is too small. Remember, you can also reduce the carbon footprint of your big day by holding your ceremony and your reception at the same venue. Green Union is a useful eco-friendly wedding resource in the UK for eco-conscious couples.

5. WEDDING DRESSES OOZING OLD HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR

After scouting the bridal runways, there’s clearly a wave of old Hollywood glamour-inspired wedding dresses coming your way. From lightweight feathers to geometric metallic embellishments and sophisticated silhouette styles, a vintage gown either for your ceremony or reception is sure to turn heads. British designer Jenny Packham – a favourite with Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge – has captured this trend beautifully in her 2020 collection.

6. YET MORE UNIQUE PERSONALISATION

Personal touches will continue to go a long way to impressing your family and friends. From bespoke imagery, monogrammed napkins, handkerchiefs, edible wedding favours and even keepsake bejewelled headbands for the bridal party, there are countless ways to achieve this trend whatever the budget you have in mind. It’s also something to keep in mind if you’re looking for wedding gift ideas, too. Creating a personalised aisle runner or a dance floor decal from Dance Floor Décor are right up there with our favourites.
