116 Pall Mall Celebrates National Apprenticeship Week (5-11 February 2024)
During National Apprenticeship Week, we had a conversation with Aaron De Souza Thomas, the new Degree Apprentice at 116 Pall Mall. Aaron shared his journey, experiences, and aspirations within Searcys, highlighting his passion for learning and dedication to his role.
Q: Can you introduce yourself?
A: Certainly. I'm Aaron De Souza Thomas, the new Degree Apprentice stationed at 116 Pall Mall. Currently, I'm immersed in my studies for a Chartered Manager Business Degree and Level 6 Apprenticeship, which is a 36-month programme. I'm part of the WSH 2023 cohort, and there are 20 of us in total. Our learning experience also involves a blend of virtual learning sessions at Arden University.
Q: Could you tell us a bit about your journey leading up to joining Searcys?
A: Fresh out of college, I dedicated a year to actively seeking out apprenticeship opportunities until I discovered WSH and the promising apprenticeship they had in store. My curiosity led me to delve into the rich history of Searcys and WSH. Prior to officially starting here at Searcys at 116 Pall Mall, I had the privilege of gaining experience within WSH during my work placement at BaxterStorey. On a personal note, I'm passionate about delving into the intricacies of business through study and hands-on experience. This apprenticeship aligns perfectly with my interests, and I'm eagerly anticipating the journey ahead.
Q: Could you share details about your role at Searcys, including when you joined and your responsibilities?
A: My current position is that of a degree apprentice, a role that encompasses a bit of everything, keeping me on my toes and constantly on the move. I officially joined on November 10, 2023. I have been immersing myself in the various teams within 116 Pall Mall, gaining insights into staff management, business operations, and the intricacies of each role within the venue.
Q: Can you elaborate on the specifics of your Apprenticeship programme and what aspect excites you the most?
A: The Apprenticeship programme is a dynamic journey for me, offering mobility and the freedom to explore different Searcys venues. This hands-on experience allows me to witness the evolving nature of these venues and participate in events to hone my expertise. The excitement lies in the diversity and adaptability of the role, providing valuable insights into the ever-changing landscape of Searcys.
Q: How is your course progressing?
A: The course is going well; I've transitioned into the kitchen, which has been a valuable experience. I'm gaining a deeper understanding of event preparation, focusing on a two-day lead time to ensure the freshness of the offerings. Learning about preventing cross-contamination through the proper use of cutting boards has been crucial. General prep work, especially for larger bookings, has also been a part of my learning curve.
Although I haven't officially started my studies yet, I've completed my coursework. It's been a productive time, delving into topics like management styles and gaining insights into Searcys. Recently, I submitted my coursework for Contemporary Business Environment. Working at this venue has been a positive experience. The location is fantastic, and the staff, especially in the kitchen, have been incredibly supportive. Coming into the kitchen with minimal back-of-house experience, I initially felt clueless, but the team has been patient and helpful, guiding me through the process.
Q: What has been the most challenging aspect of the course that you've successfully overcome?
A: The coursework posed a challenge, particularly in gathering necessary information. As a newcomer to sourcing and creating a bibliography, I found it challenging to locate some specific details about Searcys. I have been through the website but would love to explore more.
