Speaking with Ana Mendes, Deputy General Manager at 116 Pall Mall
We had the pleasure of speaking with Ana Mendes, the Deputy General Manager of 116 Pall Mall, a prestigious venue known as the home of the Institute of Directors. Championing women on International Women’s Day and beyond, we delve into Ana’s role that leads a large team and oversees a range of operations, ensuring the seamless function of various facets within our building.
Please tell us about yourself and your journey in the hospitality industry.
My name is Ana Mendes and I currently serve as the Deputy General Manager at 116 Pall Mall. My time in hospitality spans over 12 years, beginning in Prague where I spent some time in the hotel industry after completing my hospitality management degree. I then returned to Portugal to further my career before relocating to the UK nearly 11 years ago.
Starting in hotel management roles, I gradually transitioned into banqueting and event management. My tenure at Searcys began in 2015 and over the past nine years I've continuously evolved in various roles, gaining new experiences and responsibilities along the way.
What does your role entail, and what are you responsible for?
I oversee the operational aspects of 116 Pall Mall. This encompasses managing the restaurant, Champagne Bar, members’ areas, hospitality services, and events. With such a diverse range of offering outlets and responsibilities within my remit, my role also extends to people management, ensuring seamless coordination between departments, including the kitchen and sales teams, to deliver successful operations.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
I see International Women's Day as an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the inherent strength and determination that women bring to the table. Throughout their lives, women navigate various challenges, whether in personal or professional realms. Being a woman is undoubtedly demanding, requiring considerable resilience to push boundaries and overcome obstacles. We delve into the complexities of womanhood, acknowledging the hardships and successes that shape the female experience.
International Women's Day becomes a platform to honour the tenacity and accomplishments of women, highlighting their ability to thrive despite adversities.
Could you share an interesting historical fact about 116 Pall Mall?
Certainly! Our Champagne Bar sits in wine cellars that date back to the 1800’s when they belonged to the Prince of Wales. Despite the building undergoing several reconstructions, this single original piece from its inception remains preserved in the Champagne Bar, serving as a fascinating nod to our building’s rich history.
Wine or Champagne?
Champagne, without a doubt! Bubbles are a perfect choice for any celebration – and our Champagne Bar is the ideal space for it!
What is your favourite dish at 116 Pall Mall?
Well, at 116 Pall Mall we have a very varied menu, but I must say that nothing quite compares to the simplicity and freshness of our Searcys smoked salmon. Paired with a crisp glass of Champagne, it's a timeless combination.
Any exciting plans in the works for 116 Pall Mall?
We're currently exploring a few innovative concepts for our terrace from the brasserie to enhance the summer experience. Imagine a classic sunset ambience with Champagne or a refreshing G&T - a project that promises to elevate both our guests' and members’ dining experiences very much.
Can you share a particularly memorable event or moment from your time at 116 Pall Mall?
There have been many memorable moments throughout my journey here, but one that stands out is our exceptional performance last December, where we achieved record-breaking results.
It was truly rewarding to celebrate this achievement with the entire team. Additionally, in 2023 we also held a fantastic summer party, hosting 1,500 guests in a single day, a real standout event. The smooth execution and overwhelmingly positive feedback from clients made it a truly unforgettable experience for us, and we’re looking forward to doing more this summer.
